Track: Large Advances To Finals

Stevi Large moved one step closer to winning an NCAA Championship, reaching the finals in the hammer throw.

Fayetteville, Ark — Akron senior Stevi Large is one step closer to winning an NCAA title, after outpacing everyone in the preliminaries of the hammer throw on Wednesday.

Large, who entered the NCAA Championships as the No. 2 ranked thrower, had the best distance in the prelims, throwing 215 feet, 9 inches. Her first throw ended with a foul, but her second toss went the incredible distance. That toss won the round by almost 10 feet, beating out Fresno State's Sharon Ayala (206-2).
Large's Akron teammate, Valerie Wert, also competed in the event. Her best throw was 182-6, which was good for 19th place. The top 12 throws advanced to the finals on Friday.
On the men's side of the event, Kent State's Matt Pfleger finished 24th with a distance of 182-07.
In the women's javelin, Kent State senior Kim Hamilton advanced to the finals with an eighth place finish. She had a distance of 161-10. That distance qualified by just over two feet.
On the track, two Western Michigan athletes saw the year end in the 400-meter hurdles. Jennifer Sabra, just missed reaching the finals, placing 19th with a time of 58.59 seconds. The top 18 times advanced to the championship.
Sabra's teammate, Danielle Brown, saw her collegiate career come to a close with a time of 1:00.98 in the event. Brown is not done running this summer however, as she will compete at the United State Track and Field Championships on June 23.
